How would Social Media owned by the state turn out?
Facebook has sparked a million controversies with using data and "accidentally" sharing it with other third-party companies. The Cambridge Analytica may have not started it all, but definitely helped raise the question of data and what it happens when it is owned by private companies. One solution to this kind of problem would be a public owned social media. But what would be the outcomes of such a thing?
Legal aspects: from a legal point of view it makes sense to have a governmental social media. The ones deciding the laws of the platform would be compelled to follow the legislation of the country and thus the will and the needs of the people. In this sense, the state would be the one to suffer if any inconvenience would be caused. The information would be used for the good of the individual and would be more regulated and better explained on how it is used. There may be the case where the people might be influenced by politicians using the data stored on the website. But social media is made for communities. It would be easier for people to notify each other in case of big problems, and decisions might end up being taken in an instant. What if the people rebel on social media and request strange laws (it might be the case - Trump didn't get elected by accident, someone made a joke)? That's a discussion for another time.
Economic aspects: I have not even the slightest of economic education and ideas. So I would assume local and national trade and market would grow, making space for smaller businesses to flourish and get known by more people.
Social aspect: Well, this is where I believe that it would have a bigger impact. It would probably allow people to express their opinions on state matter more often and faster. Matters that would impact the society as a whole would be easier to discuss and to vote on. Communities would probably be more professional but as well better tied together. Civic initiatives would also start booming as well.
All-in-all, I believe that a public owned social media would somewhat switch the focus from making a profit to the people and give them more power on how their information would be used.
